Car Dealership Security for Lots, Keys and Inventory
Overnight guards and patrol that protect inventory, keys, wheels, and converters on dealership lots.
A dealership lot is millions of dollars in inventory parked outdoors, often lit but empty from closing to morning. Thieves know it. In November 2023, thieves at a Hayward used car dealer pried open the key lockbox with a pickaxe, drove a G Class through the front window, took four vehicles and the keys to every car in the showroom, and one came back after deputies left.
In 2020, 74 vehicles were taken from a San Leandro dealership in one night after looters broke into the key box; losses were estimated at $5 million and the dealer hired armed guards afterward. Parts theft is the other drain. LA County deputies reported a 400 percent rise in catalytic converter theft in 2020, and wheel crews can leave rows of cars on blocks before sunrise. A guard who is awake, moving, and on camera changes those odds.
What we protect against
- Showroom break ins targeting key boxes, followed by theft of multiple vehicles
- Catalytic converter cutting on trucks, hybrids, and high clearance vehicles
- Wheel and tire theft that leaves vehicles on blocks
- Test drive theft and fraud using fake or stolen identification
- Service drive theft of customer vehicles and parts
- Vandalism and break ins to vehicles on the lot
What we provide
- Overnight lot officers with randomized foot and vehicle routes
- Hourly checks of showroom doors, service bays, and key storage
- Gate and perimeter checks and immediate reporting of fence or lighting damage
- Mobile patrol supervision with GPS and photo proof
- Test drive and lot traffic support during sales events
- Incident reports with VINs, photos, and video references for police and insurers
- Key control and lot lighting recommendations
Rules and requirements
- California SB 1087 and AB 1740, signed September 25, 2022 and effective January 1, 2023, restrict who can sell catalytic converters to recyclers and require recyclers to record the year, make, and model of the source vehicle with a copy of its title, which makes clear theft reports more useful to investigators.

Example program with more than one officer
Example: one unarmed officer on the lot from closing (around 9 p.m.) to opening, walking and driving the rows on irregular routes and checking the showroom and key room each hour. Mobile patrol adds two randomized drive throughs to confirm the post is active. Over long holiday closures, or for high end inventory, upgrade the overnight post to armed. During weekend sales events, an unarmed officer manages the lot and test drive area.
Questions we get
Do we need a guard if we have cameras?
Cameras record crime; they rarely stop it. Remote monitoring helps, but a person on the lot can confront issues early, verify alarms, and guide police to the exact row and vehicle.
Is unarmed enough for a dealership?
For many lots, yes. We recommend armed coverage for high value inventory, prior incidents, or areas where crews have targeted keys and multiple vehicles.
Can you protect against catalytic converter theft?
Visible, randomized patrols and well lit perimeters are the strongest deterrents. Officers know the sound and look of a cutting crew and call police while it is happening.
Which officers fit
Most sites need one officer type. Larger sites and events sometimes use more than one.
Unarmed guards
Primary
Fits most overnight lot coverage at dealers in moderate risk areas. The job is visible patrol, camera coordination, and fast calls to police.
Armed guards
Common
Fits high end and performance inventory, stores with prior break ins, and lots where crews have targeted keys or multiple vehicles.
Off duty police officers
Common
Fits weekend sales events, holiday closures, and post incident periods where an experienced officer reviews key control and lot layout and works with investigators.
