School and Campus Security With State Required Training

Campus officers with the extra state training California requires, plus coverage for games, dances and after hours.

Unarmed: primaryArmed: commonOff duty officers: common

Schools ask security officers to do a different job than most sites: control access without making campus feel like a lockdown, know the students, and handle conflicts involving minors and parents. California recognizes that. Under Business and Professions Code 7583.45, guards working on K through 12 or community college district property, including those employed by a private patrol operator under contract, must complete a 24 hour school security course developed by BSIS with POST.

Common problems are predictable: outsiders entering through unlocked gates, fights before and after school, custody disputes at pickup, vandalism and break ins over weekends, and crowds at games and dances. Blackout provides officers who staff gates and visitor check in, patrol during passing periods and dismissal, cover athletic events and dances, and run mobile patrol checks nights and weekends with photo proof. Officers observe, document and contact police and administration; they do not replace school discipline.

Rules and requirements
  • Business and Professions Code 7583.45 requires security guards who work on K through 12 school district property (including county offices of education and charter schools) or community college district property under contract with a licensed private patrol operator to complete the BSIS school security course, a 24 hour course BSIS developed in consultation with POST.
  • Contract guards must also hold a BSIS guard card and complete Power to Arrest training and 32 hours of security officer skills training.

General information, not legal advice. Confirm requirements for your license and location.

Example program with more than one officer

Example for a 600 student private school: one unarmed guard on the main gate and visitor check in from 7 am to 4 pm, one unarmed guard roving campus during arrival, lunch and dismissal, two unarmed guards for Friday night games, and mobile patrol checks at 11 pm and 3 am on weekends with photo proof of locked doors.

Armed, unarmed, or off duty: which fits?

Questions we get

Do your officers have the state required school training?

Yes. Officers assigned to K through 12 school district or community college district property complete the 24 hour BSIS school security course required by Business and Professions Code 7583.45.

Can you cover only games and events?

Yes. Many schools use us only for athletics, dances and graduation, with no daily post.

Do you provide armed security for schools?

We can when the school or district requests it. Most campuses are well served by trained unarmed officers.

Which officers fit

Most sites need one officer type. Larger sites and events sometimes use more than one.

Unarmed guards

Primary

Unarmed guards fit most campus roles: gates, visitor check in, campus patrol, games and dances.

Armed guards

Common

Armed officers fit schools and colleges with specific threats, remote campuses, or boards that have adopted an armed security policy.

Off duty police officers

Common

Off duty or retired law enforcement fits campus security leads, threat situations and large athletic events.
